Corny puns

By Polly Esther, Founding Editor & Head of Wordplay

Corny puns are the ones told with a completely straight face, usually by someone who knows exactly how bad the line is and is going to say it anyway. That is the whole appeal. The register has a name now, the dad joke, and it has rules: keep it clean, keep it obvious, and never acknowledge the groan. This page collects the dad-joke section from every topic we publish, which is the corniest material on the site by some distance, and sorts it by theme so you can find the right flavour of bad. Nothing here is trying to be clever. These are the lines you deploy at a barbecue, in a family group chat, at the start of a lesson or halfway through a slide deck, and then carry on talking as though nothing happened. Each section links to the full collection it came from if you need more in the same register.

What are corny puns?

A corny pun is a pun that leans into being obvious. Where a clever pun hides its second meaning and rewards you for spotting it, a corny pun puts the wordplay right on the surface and dares you to react. It is the defining move of the dad joke, and the eye-roll it produces is the point rather than a failure.

Corny puns FAQ

What makes a pun corny rather than clever?

Visibility. A clever pun buries the second meaning so you have to catch it; a corny pun puts it on the surface. Both are the same device, but a corny pun is not asking to be admired, it is asking for an eye-roll, and it gets one.

Are corny puns and dad jokes the same thing?

Almost. A dad joke is a corny pun plus a delivery style: straight face, no build-up, and absolutely no acknowledgement of the reaction. Every line on this page is written to survive that delivery.

Are these corny puns suitable for children?

Yes. The dad-joke register is clean by definition, so everything on this page works in a classroom, a family message or a card for any age.

What is the best way to deliver a corny pun?

Flat, and then move on. The humour lives in the gap between how bad the line is and how unbothered you are about having said it. Pausing for a reaction is what kills it.

Where can I find corny puns about a specific subject?

Each section above links to the collection it was pulled from, and every one of those holds a full dad-joke section of its own plus one-liners, kids' jokes and captions on the same subject.
