Silly puns

By Polly Esther, Founding Editor & Head of Wordplay

Silly is its own register, and the knock-knock joke is where it lives. A knock-knock takes the plainest pun in the world, stretches it over four lines, and makes the listener do half the work by asking the questions. It should not be funny. It is extremely funny to anyone under about eleven, and reliably funny to everyone else at exactly the moment they have decided to stop finding it funny. This page collects the knock-knock section from every collection on the site and sorts it by theme, so whether you need something daft about dinosaurs for a lunchbox note or something daft about coffee for a colleague, it is one scroll away. Nothing here is clever and nothing here is meant to be. Each section links to the full collection it was drawn from, all of which carry a kids' joke section too.

What are silly puns?

A silly pun is wordplay that makes no attempt at sophistication and gets its charm from the attempt being so obvious. The knock-knock joke is the purest form: a name that turns out to be a pun, stretched across a call-and-response that everybody already knows the shape of.

Silly puns FAQ

How does a knock-knock joke work?

Four lines, fixed shape. "Knock knock." "Who's there?" A name. "[Name] who?" Then the punchline, where the name turns out to be a pun. The listener supplies two of the four lines, which is why it works so well with children.

Are these silly puns suitable for young children?

Yes. Every line on this page is clean, and the knock-knock format is the easiest kind of joke for a child to remember and retell, which is usually the real goal.

What is the difference between silly puns and corny puns?

Register. A corny pun is an adult delivering an obvious line with a straight face. A silly pun is not pretending to be anything at all. Corny wants an eye-roll from a grown-up, silly wants a laugh from a seven-year-old.

How do I write my own knock-knock joke?

Find a name that sounds like the opening of a common phrase, then build the phrase as the punchline. That is the whole method. Say the name out loud a few times and the phrase usually falls out on its own.

Where can I find more silly puns on one topic?

Each section links to the collection it came from. Those hold the full knock-knock set for that subject plus jokes for kids, one-liners and short puns.
